Fed: Holiday road toll moves to 43 after NSW deaths

SYDNEY, Dec 30 AAP - Two deaths in NSW and one in Tasmania have taken the national
holiday road toll to 44.

A 22-year-old motorcyclist died after he was thrown from his bike in the Sydney suburb
of Merrylands after losing control and running into a road sign and pole about 3pm (AEDT)
on Tuesday.

About three hours later a man died after his car collided head on with a semi trailer
on the Great Western Highway at Wentworth Falls, west of Sydney.

Their deaths take the NSW toll to 10.

Tasmania recorded its first road fatality for the Christmas-New Year holiday period,
following the death of a four-year-old boy who was injured in a Christmas Day road crash.

The boy, injured when the car he was in struck a power pole in Glenorchy about 9.10pm
(AEDT) on Christmas Day, died in the paediatric unit of the Royal Hobart Hospital on Tuesday,
police said.

Victoria still tops the list with 11 road deaths, Queensland and Western Australia
have had nine fatalities each, there have been three deaths in the Northern Territory
and one in South Australia.

The Australian Capital Territory remain fatality free.
