How Australia's tax system compares globally:
- 8th lowest taxing country
- 3rd lowest spending country as proportion of GDP
- 4th lowest direct taxing of individuals
- 5th highest gross-wage earnings for average workers
- Top marginal income tax rate of 48.5 per cent is 11th highest
- Lower than average top marginal income tax threshold
- 3rd highest corporate tax take as a percentage of GDP
- Slightly above average corporate tax rate
- 3rd and 2nd highest capital gains tax rates for shares
- 4th lowest excise duty on petrol
- 7th highest reliance on property and transaction taxes (mainly imposed by states)
