Fed: Labor says Costello should release fuel price reports

The federal opposition has called on Treasurer PETER COSTELLO to release two importantreports into petrol prices and implement suggestions that would lower fuel costs.

The government is understood to have received a report it commissioned into fuel taxationfrom economic consultant DAVID TREBECK.

Another report, by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission into bowser pricefluctuations, has already been lodged.

But newspaper reports say Mr COSTELLO will not release the findings until the Budgetis handed down in May.

Labor's assistant treasury spokesman MARK LATHAM says if they contain recommendationsbeneficial to the motoring public then they should be released -- and acted on -- immediately.

The TREBECK inquiry into the structure of fuel taxation and its impact was announced12 months ago after the government abolished automatic fuel excise indexation.
